IIT Kanpur Bay Area Alumni have grown over the years but we are hardly able to interact with folks from other batches. IIT Kanpur Silicon Valley Chapter (IITKSVAA) has a singular mission of connecting all the Bay Area alums (their families) and building a strong IITK community, which can help each other on both professional and personal level. From classrooms and corridors to careers and milestones—our journey since 1986 has been nothing short of remarkable. This 40th reunion is more than an event; it’s a heartfelt celebration of enduring bonds and shared memories from IIT Kanpur.

Let’s gather once more to reconnect, reflect, and relive those iconic moments that shaped who we are. Come home to where it all began—at IITK.

n recent years, IITK has seen exponential growth in the student population. The undergraduate count has grown from 1,200 back in 1965 to over 4,000 today, and post graduates have grown from a few hundred to over 3,000. This requires a huge growth in campus infrastructure from academic buildings, labs and lecture halls to hostel and staff accommodation.

The 1965 Batch (Class of 1970) has launched a drive to support IIT Kanpur’s growth and vision for the future and the resulting need for major infrastructure capital projects. The Batch collectively wishes to raise Rs.2.5 Crore to support funding for these capital projects which will elevate the existing infrastructure and ecosystem in the campus and in turn ensure better facilities for the students and the academia.

IIT Kanpur has experienced remarkable expansion in recent times, particularly in its student enrollment. Since 1965, the undergraduate population has surged from 1,200 to over 5000, while postgraduate numbers have grown from a few hundred to surpass 4000. This substantial increase necessitates significant development in campus infrastructure, encompassing academic buildings, laboratories, lecture halls, hostels and staff accommodation etc.

The Class of 1999 has initiated a campaign to contribute to IIT Kanpur’s ongoing growth and its visionary plans for the future. Their objective is to raise funds to support the critical needs of the institute i.e. Infrastructure projects aimed at improving the living and learning experience of the students, strengthening the R&D ecosystem and lastly providing financial aid to the students from marginalised family backgrounds.

Class of 1966 has contributed generously to support various initiatives at IIT Kanpur. These initiatives include Furnishing of Auditorium, upgrading the seating arrangement, the Audio Visual Facilities, Alumni Association activities, Mid Day Meal Facility and Scholarships for Opportunity school. Currently, the funds are being utilized to support the underprivileged students of Opportunity School. Mid Day Meals and scholarships are being provided with the invaluable benefaction.

Established in 1964, Aerospace Engineering department is a premier teaching and research centre today. The department is engaged in engineering science instruction, in-flight laboratory work, aerodynamic testing, and indigenous design and fabrication of advanced facilities and instruments.

The Chair, instituted by the Class of 1984, is open to all the departments of engineering and sciences and can be occupied for a period of three years.

Venkateswaran Srinivasan, an exceptional individual whose brilliance and dedication left an indelible mark on the realms of education and technology, departed from us in Chennai on the 24th of November 2023. An esteemed alumnus of IIT Kanpur’s Electrical Engineering Department (Class of 1990), Mr. Srinivasan’s illustrious career spanned diverse fields. His tenure as a Physics Faculty at Rani Institute of Scholastic Education in Chennai showcased his expertise in derivatives, indices, and options trading, a testament to his wealth of experience as a self-employed professional since August 2019. His integrity was evident during his tenure as a Specialist at Amazon’s Development Center, where his commitment to a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) highlighted his unwavering dedication. Beyond academia, his contributions to platforms like Tutor.com, where he engaged in online tutoring in Mathematics and Physics, and pivotal projects at IIT Kanpur in Fiber Optic Communication and Power Distribution Automation, reflected his multifaceted expertise. His earlier roles as a Consultant at Midas Communication Technologies and a Mathematics Tutor at Agrawal Classes underscored his versatile skills in technology and education.

Mr. Srinivasan’s passion for teaching remained undiminished until his final moments, epitomizing his unwavering commitment to his true calling. He leaves a legacy of knowledge, inspiration, and invaluable contributions

Opportunity School is a 52 year old school providing education to the underprivileged children living in and around IIT Kanpur campus. It came into existence because the children of people working as domestic help had no hope of getting education. It has progressed from 6 students and a Type-2 house to about 300 students and a block in Kendriya Vidyalaya.

Education to the underprivileged children is the only way to brighten their future through self-empowerment. And it is also the best way to eradicate child labour from society. The school has been functioning all these years by adhering to the principles of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. We try to help our children acquire skills, habits, and attitude to adjust well in the society.

At present the school runs classes from 1 to 8 and is recognized by the UP Board of Education. We are trying to go up to class 10 as many children, especially girls, drop out of school after class 8 because their parents are not prepared to send them to expensive schools outside the campus.

We have also started identifying individual talent and providing opportunity to hone them by inviting specialized teachers for dance, art, jewellery making, quilling, mehendi application.

Our students have also started acquiring computer skills, using an interactive science lab, and learning book craft and home science.

Dr. Purushottam Kashinath Kelakar (1909-1990) is best remembered as the founding director of IIT Kanpur, established in 1959. To honor his immense contribution in the field of technical education, the Government of India honored him with Padma Bhushan in 1969.

As alumnae of IIT Kanpur, we cherish the values, friendships, and opportunities that continue to shape our journeys. Today, we have the chance to pass that gift forward to the next generation of women scholars.

With a deep sense of giving back to our alma mater, the alumnae of IIT Kanpur launch the continuing ‘Alumni Scholarship for Girl Students,’ commencing in the Academic Session 2025–26.

While government norms provide fee benefits to students from families with an income of up to ₹5 lakhs, many deserving students from families earning ₹5–10 lakhs per annum remain excluded, even if their income barely exceeds the limit, such as ₹5.05 lakhs per annum. These students often face significant financial strain from tuition, housing, and living expenses, making it challenging to focus fully on academics and holistic development. The narrow eligibility gap leaves talented students without crucial support, despite only marginal differences in family income.

The Alumni Scholarship for Girl Students aims to bridge this gap by:

• Providing scholarships to meritorious girl students in B.Tech. and 2-year Master’s courses.
• Supporting those who fall outside government support norms but still face genuine financial challenges.
• Enabling young women to pursue academics without the burden of financial stress.
• Promoting holistic growth and development alongside academic excellence.
