My career would not be possible without the formative years I spent at IITK. The knowledge I gained there in academics and the interaction with peers gave me a critical foundation. I’m especially thankful for the outstanding faculty at IITK, who were so patient and generous with their time. They instilled in me intellectual tools that I continue to use today, like the ability to break a complex problem into its components and to reason logically and statistically. There was also the crucible of debating with classmates, which honed my critical thinking. I have a profound sense of gratitude for this great institution which has played such a seminal role in shaping my worldview.

My journey at IIT Kanpur, where I graduated with a B.Tech in Computer Science in 1995, was transformative in ways that continue to resonate nearly three decades later. The rigorous academic environment not only equipped me with technical expertise but also instilled a problem-solving mindset that has proven invaluable throughout my career. What truly sets IITK apart is its unique ecosystem that nurtures both intellectual growth and lasting relationships. The friendships forged in the hostels, during late-night study and bulla sessions, and through Culfests, movie screenings, and other cultural activities have stood the test of time. Contributing to IITK is more than just giving back – it’s an investment in preserving and enhancing this extraordinary environment for future generations. Every time I hear about the achievements of current students or witness the innovative technologies emerging from our campus, I’m reminded of why supporting IITK matters. The skills, values,and relationships I developed at IITK have been cornerstone elements of my life and career. Supporting the institution through giving is my way of ensuring that future students have access to the same transformative experiences that shaped my journey.

I arrived on the campus of IIT Kanpur in 1971 as a 16-year old, proud of having qualified with the high rank of All India 13. I was both excited and nervous to be embarking on the non- traditional journey of becoming an engineer in this very male dominated environment. These were the early days of IITK. Only two women had graduated B.Tech – Kavery Muthana, the director’s daughter, and Neeru Mohan, my cousin and inspiration.

I graduated with B.Tech in EE in 1976, and then M.Tech in EE in 1979. The education was excellent, with a very accomplished faculty and bright classmates. Above all, IIT taught me how to thrive in a male world. I also have very warm memories of so many fun times spent with friends, especially in the Girls’ Hostel.

IIT opened the doors of the world to me. After IIT, I pursued higher education at Carnegie-Mellon University in the USA, and worked at Philips Research. I have had a rewarding career as an engineer and researcher that has brought a sense of accomplishment. I am proud to have graduated from IIT Kanpur. Even after all these years, I can impress people just by telling them that I graduated from IITK. For the past many years, I, along with my husband, have been making annual contributions to the IITK Foundation as part of its annual giving program. We feel it is important to give back to an institution that has given me so much, and to which I am still deeply attached. Our donations allow IITK to keep investing in facilities and students, and to reach new heights. As an alumna, I feel invested in IIT’s future. I want to continue being proud of having graduated from IITK.

My five years as a B.Tech student from 1977 to 1982 provided a strong foundation for my subsequent achievements. One enduring memory is of my batchmate during the first three years, who, despite coming from a humble rural background, cleared the JEE through his own efforts. Fortunately, tuition and hostel fees were very nominal at that time. With a merit cum means scholarship, he graduated with good grades and is now well-settled abroad. Today, tuition fees and other expenses are beyond the reach of many deserving students. Helping such students is my primary motivation to give back to IITK.
